Commodity Design Fails to Solve Important Challenges
I’ll tell you a secret, every now and then I like to look at Fiverr and Upwork. I look at what other design professionals feel is a reasonable offer on those platforms. Logos, brochures, and even brand strategy are offered for rock-bottom prices.
One more secret, once or twice in the background of a project, I’ve even bought those services. Now, I’m not looking for super cheap labor. I’m experiencing the pain that my customers feel every time they make this same mistake.
For some reason, there’s a part of me that deeply desires this pain. I need to know how rough it is to work with a designer that claims professionalism, but has no process. I just have to experience the dread of receiving a logo design that technically qualifies as what I described; yet is miles away from a functional solution. And I’ve struggled translating my thoughts into words that someone halfway across the world (with English as a second or third language) understands in the same way I do.
This is not how this stuff works. Yet only a few business owners realize this before it’s too late. A true professional asks questions, clarifies, adds value, and confronts challenges with exploration. Too often owners and CEOs invest the cheapest branding solution, and as a result the branding reflects the poor choice.
If I can offer one word of advice: PROCESS. Work with those that have one. Reject anyone who doesn’t.
A process makes you a partner to the formation of your brand. Process translates the words and pictures in your head, and everything you embrace as your brand, into insights and actionable direction—because of the process. Trust the process.
In the video below, I talk about the Think Tank branding process. It’s about creating meaningful connection and reinforcing feelings with incredible design work.
